We have the best medical care in the world; however our current healthcare system needs to be improved. Competition in the market place needs to be increased. Repeal of anti-competitive protections for the insurance industry will open up the marketplace, increase benefit options, bring better consumer service and reduce health care costs. Insurance companies would be held to the same rules as small businesses.
An insurer in Maine should be able to offer coverage to a family in Arizona. That same family in Arizona should be able to take their current health care policy with them to any other state.
When elected, I will work hard to ensure that true tort reform is passed once and for all. Limiting frivolous lawsuits (tort reform) is something that legislators have resisted in the past. These frivolous lawsuits are a major factor in healthcare costs. Tort reform must be passed now!
I believe that Government needs to refocus itself towards fixing the current system and should not consider socialized medicine. Programs, contracts and delivery systems must have community oversight and input if any tax dollars are involved. Communities are the best at knowing what their community needs.
